Why KL students find trig hard, and why that’s good news

Trig in 0606 cycles through a small, predictable set of question types, each of which is a fixed routine underneath the intimidating surface:

  • Identity proofs: start from the busier side and use sin⁡2θ+cos⁡2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1.
  • Solving equations in a range: reduce to one ratio, treat it as a quadratic, then find every angle in the interval.
  • Solving equations in a given range: rearrange to one trig ratio, factorise hidden quadratics, and collect every solution in range.

Because the routines repeat, trig responds to drilling better than almost any other topic, so steady, guided practice pays back quickly.

Common questions

My child freezes on trig identity proofs, can 1-to-1 fix that?
Yes, and quickly. Identity proofs feel impossible because students don't know where to start. The fix is a fixed discipline: begin from the more complicated side and use sin²+cos²=1. Once a KL student sees that routine applied to a few proofs with feedback, the panic usually disappears, it's a method gap, not a talent gap.
How much of the 0606 exam is trigonometry?
It's the second-largest mark source after calculus and a fixture in recent sessions, identities, equations in a range, radian measure and graphs.
