Why is quadratics the right place to start for a private candidate?
Because quadratics underpin much of 0606, so building them solidly makes the rest of a private candidate's self-study far smoother. The discriminant returns in tangency and circles, completing the square drives calculus max/min, and quadratic inequalities appear inside kinematics.
