How to Work with an Online Tutor Effectively

Online 1-to-1 is a powerful way to learn Add Math, but like any tutoring, it works best when the student comes prepared and engages actively. A passive hour of watching achieves far less than an hour of doing with feedback. Here’s how to make each session genuinely move the grade.

Come prepared with specifics

The most productive sessions start from the student’s actual sticking points, not a blank slate. Before a session, gather:

• A specific problem or topic that’s causing trouble, “I can’t start connected-rates questions”.
• A marked past paper or homework, with the lost-mark questions flagged.
• A question written down, phrased precisely (which is a skill in itself).

Arriving with these focuses the hour on what will help most, rather than spending it figuring out where to start.

Do the work, don’t just watch

The single biggest determinant of whether tutoring works is active engagement. On a shared whiteboard, the student should be writing, attempting, and explaining, not just watching the tutor solve things. This is the active-recall principle: producing solutions with immediate feedback is where learning happens; passively following builds only the illusion of understanding.

A good tutor insists on this, handing the pen back, asking “what next?”, making the student do the reasoning. But the student has to lean in for it to work.

Follow up between sessions

A session sets direction; the work between sessions cements it. If the tutor sets practice, do it, and bring back what didn’t work. Tutoring compounds when each session builds on genuine effort in between; it stalls when the student only engages during the hour. The error log is a good bridge, note what came up, work on it, report back.

Make the most of the online format
