What Add Math Grade Do I Need for A Level Maths?

Parents and students often ask which Add Math grade “unlocks” A Level Maths. The honest answer has two parts: the formal requirement (which varies) and the real readiness it stands for (which matters more). Both are worth understanding before making decisions.
The formal requirement
Entry requirements for A Level Maths vary by school and college, but a common expectation is a solid B or above in IGCSE Add Math, with many competitive programmes preferring an A. Some accept a strong IGCSE Maths grade instead, sometimes with bridging work. The specific threshold is set by your intended college, so check theirs, this page can’t replace their published requirement.
Why readiness matters more than the letter
The grade is a proxy for what really counts: genuine readiness for A Level pace. A Level Maths builds directly on Add Math content, calculus, logarithms, trigonometry, so a student who understands those methods arrives ready. One who memorised routines to scrape the same grade will struggle when A Level moves faster and deeper.
So two students with the same B can be very differently prepared. The one who understood the methods is set up; the one who pattern-matched to a grade may find A Level a shock. This is why getting Add Math genuinely solid, not just passed, is the real goal for anyone continuing to A Level.
Without Add Math
A student can take A Level Maths without having done Add Math, but it’s a harder route. A Level assumes the mathematical maturity 0606 builds, so starting without it means learning that groundwork under A Level time pressure. A strong IGCSE Maths grade plus deliberate bridging work helps, but Add Math remains the smoothest on-ramp.
