Each 0606 paper is two hours of sustained, concentrated problem-solving, and concentration fades with fatigue. A student who is sharp for the first hour but tired in the second makes exactly the careless errors, sign slips, mode mistakes, misreads, that cost marks. Stamina is a real exam requirement, and, like everything in Add Math, it’s trainable.

Why fatigue costs marks

Problem-solving is demanding on concentration, and Add Math punishes lapses more than most subjects because each step depends on the last. As fatigue sets in during the second half of a paper, the careless-error rate climbs, and those errors are pure lost marks, the maths was known, the tired brain slipped. A student who has never sustained focus for a full paper in practice meets that fatigue for the first time in the exam, exactly when it’s most costly.

Short-burst practice doesn’t build it

Practising single questions or short bursts is useful for learning topics, but it doesn’t build endurance, any more than sprinting trains you for a distance run. A student whose practice is all short sessions can know the material well and still fade late in a full paper. The stamina gap is invisible until a full-length attempt exposes it.

Full timed papers build it

The fix is straightforward: sit full, timed papers in the run-up, not just fragments. A complete paper under time trains sustained concentration directly, and repeated over several papers, it builds the endurance to stay sharp for the full two hours. Build up to sitting both papers with a realistic gap, so the total exam-day load feels familiar rather than shocking. This is part of why full papers belong in the final phase of revision.

Look after the basics too

Stamina isn’t only trained, it’s also protected by the basics: sleep, not arriving already depleted, and pacing so you don’t burn out early. A well-rested student sustains focus far longer than one who crammed the night before. Combine trained endurance with good rest and the second-half slump shrinks.

A specialist can run full timed papers with your child and spot where fatigue starts costing marks, part of what ongoing tutoring provides. A trial class can begin that work. Message us on WhatsApp to book.

Common questions

Why does exam stamina matter for Add Math?
Because each paper is two hours of sustained, concentrated problem-solving, and concentration fades with fatigue. A tired brain in the second half of a paper makes exactly the careless errors, sign slips, mode mistakes, misreads, that cost marks. Students who only practise in short bursts haven't built the endurance for a full paper, and fade late. Full timed papers train the stamina the exam actually requires.
How do I build stamina for the exam?
Do full, timed papers in the run-up, not just short bursts or single questions. Sitting a complete paper under time trains sustained concentration the way running a distance trains endurance. Build up to sitting both papers with a realistic gap, so the full exam load feels familiar. Stamina, like everything in Add Math, is trainable with the right practice.

Keep going

See the teaching work on your own child. Then decide.

Every student starts with a 1-hour trial class taught by the vetted tutor your child would actually have. Real teaching, a diagnostic on real exam questions, and a straight answer on the gap to target.
