How to Approach an Unseen 0606 Question

Every 0606 paper contains at least one question that looks unfamiliar on first read, often one that chains two topics in a way you haven’t drilled. Freezing on it is the default response and the wrong one. Unseen questions are rarely as novel as they feel: they are familiar techniques in unfamiliar clothing. Here is a process for finding the route.
Translate the words into maths first
Before hunting for a method, write down, in mathematical form, everything you are given and everything you are asked. Turn “the volume is fixed at 1000” into ; turn “the rate of increase” into . This does two things: it frequently surfaces the first step on its own, and the set-up lines themselves often carry method marks, so you score even while still looking for the route.
Students who stare at the prose waiting for inspiration score nothing; students who start writing the given information as equations usually find the thread, because most 0606 questions resolve once the information is in symbols.
Ask what the topic’s standard move is
Identify the topic, then recall its default technique. Most 0606 topics have one:
- A stationary-points question? Differentiate and set to zero.
- An awkward trig equation? Get it to one ratio using an identity.
- A tangent-to-a-curve or “one point of contact”? Reach for the discriminant.
- A “show that” involving two quantities? Look for the constraint that eliminates a variable.
The unseen question is usually the standard move applied in a context you haven’t seen. Recognising the topic tells you the move.
Work forward from the given, and backward from the asked
If the forward route stalls, look at what the answer would need. A question asking for an exact surd suggests non-calculator manipulation; one asking for “the value of ” almost always ends in an equation in , so your job is to generate one, often via a discriminant or a substitution. Working from both ends often closes the gap in the middle.
Commit, and show everything
Once you have a plausible method, commit to it and show every line. Do not half-start three approaches, one method carried through cleanly banks marks; three abandoned starts bank almost none. Because 0606 rewards method so heavily, a sensible approach fully worked scores well even when a wrong turn costs the final accuracy mark. And never leave it blank: a genuine attempt at the right topic routinely earns one or two marks that a blank cannot.
This “find the route” skill is the hardest thing to self-teach and the fastest thing to learn with feedback, a specialist watching your child attempt an unseen question can name the missing instinct in minutes. That diagnosis is what the trial class offers. Message us on WhatsApp to book.
