What a Mark Scheme Teaches You

A mark scheme is far more than an answer key, it’s a map of how marks are awarded, and reading it properly teaches you how to write answers that earn them. Students who use mark schemes only to check the final number miss most of their value.

Learn how marks are split

Cambridge mark schemes break each question into marks of different kinds, and seeing the split is the education:

• M (method) marks reward a correct approach, even with a wrong number carried through.
• A (accuracy) marks need a correct result, usually depending on the method mark.
• B marks are independent, for a specific correct statement.

Most 0606 marks are M and A, which teaches the single most important exam lesson: showing your working line by line captures method marks even when the final answer slips. A student who understands this from mark schemes writes very differently from one who just aims for the answer.

Mark schemes reveal the specific things that earn marks, the details students routinely miss:

• A rejected root stated with a reason.
• A stationary point classified in words (”$\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} < 0$, hence maximum”).
• An answer in the demanded exact form or the specified $ax + by + c = 0$.

Read it after every practice paper

The habit is: after a paper, don’t just check right/wrong, study the mark scheme’s method for the questions you dropped marks on. Compare its allocation to your working and note where you’d have lost marks even on a “right” answer (unwritten steps, missing conditions). This is the heart of a good paper review, and it steadily reshapes how you write.
