Calculator Skills for Add Math Paper 2

Paper 2 allows a calculator, and knowing your machine well is a genuine advantage, but only if you avoid the traps that come with it. The calculator does arithmetic; it does not do method, and 0606 rewards method. Used well it saves time and prevents slips; used lazily it invites errors with no method marks to cushion them. Here’s how to use it well.

Master the functions that come up

Know exactly where these are on your specific model, and use them fluently:

• Angle-mode switching, radians and degrees. Circular measure and calculus-with-trig use radians; a trig equation in degrees uses degrees.
• Answer memory, to carry full precision between steps instead of retyping a rounded value.
• Powers and roots, including fractional and negative powers for calculus and indices.
• Logarithms, both $\ln$ (base $e$) and $\lg$ (base 10), used in exponential equations.
• Factorial, nCr, nPr, for permutations and combinations.

Fumbling for a function under exam pressure wastes time and breaks concentration. Fluency here is worth practising.

Avoid the two big traps

Two calculator errors sink Paper 2 answers repeatedly:

1. The wrong angle mode. A calculator silently left in degrees gives $\sin 2 = 0.035$ instead of the radian $0.909$, wrecking a segment-area question. Check the mode before every trig calculation, and reset it when the question’s angle unit changes.
2. Premature rounding. Rounding a value partway through and feeding it back in quietly kills accuracy. Keep full precision in the answer memory and round only the final answer, usually to 3 significant figures.

Method first, then evaluate

The deepest skill is knowing when not to reach for the calculator. Set up the problem algebraically, show the method lines, and only compute at the final step. This banks the method marks and means a mistyped calculation costs one mark, not the whole question. The calculator is the last step, not the first.

Prepare with your own machine
