On the non-calculator Paper 1, the exact values of the special angles must be recalled instantly, and the answer kept exact (surds and fractions), never a decimal. This question tests that recall.

Find the exact value of tan60×cos30sin230\tan 60^\circ \times \cos 30^\circ - \sin^2 30^\circ. [3]

The working

Step 1, recall the special values: tan60=3,cos30=32,sin30=12\tan 60^\circ = \sqrt{3}, \qquad \cos 30^\circ = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}, \qquad \sin 30^\circ = \frac{1}{2}

Step 2, substitute: tan60×cos30sin230=3×32(12)2(M1)\tan 60^\circ \times \cos 30^\circ - \sin^2 30^\circ = \sqrt{3} \times \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} - \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^2 \quad \text{(M1)}

Step 3, evaluate each part (3×3=3\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} = 3): =3214(M1)= \frac{3}{2} - \frac{1}{4} \quad \text{(M1)}

Step 4, combine over a common denominator: =6414=54(A1)= \frac{6}{4} - \frac{1}{4} = \frac{5}{4} \quad \text{(A1)}

Where the marks are won and lost

  • Recall the exact values correctly, this is pure memory, and a wrong value (e.g. tan60=13\tan 60^\circ = \frac{1}{\sqrt3}, which is actually tan30\tan 30^\circ) wrecks the answer.
  • 3×32=32\sqrt{3} \times \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} = \frac{3}{2} because 3×3=3\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} = 3. Mishandling the surd product is a common slip.
  • Keep everything exact, fractions, not decimals. 54\frac{5}{4} scores; 1.251.25 may lose the mark on an “exact value” question.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing tan30\tan 30^\circ and tan60\tan 60^\circ (or sin\sin and cos\cos of 3030^\circ).
  • sin230\sin^2 30^\circ meaning (sin30)2=14(\sin 30^\circ)^2 = \frac14, not sin(30)2\sin(30^\circ)^2.
  • Converting to decimals on a non-calculator, exact-value question.

Common questions

Which exact trig values do I need to know for Paper 1?
The values at 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees. In particular sin30 = 1/2, cos30 = √3/2, tan30 = 1/√3; sin45 = cos45 = 1/√2, tan45 = 1; sin60 = √3/2, cos60 = 1/2, tan60 = √3. On the non-calculator Paper 1 these must be recalled instantly, and answers kept exact (surds and fractions), not converted to decimals. A quick way to remember them is the 1-1-√2 and 1-√3-2 special triangles.
