Past Papers for Private Candidates

For a private candidate, studying 0606 without a school, past papers do double duty: they’re both your main practice and your main feedback. That makes using them well even more important than for a school student, who has teachers marking their work. Here’s how to get the most from them when you’re on your own.

Papers are your feedback loop

Without a school marking your work, mark schemes are how you find out what you actually know and how examiners award marks. So the marking and review matter enormously:

• Mark honestly against the scheme, and be pessimistic on borderline marks (self-marking tempts generosity).
• Log every error in an error log, your personal weak-spot list, which for a private candidate is doubly valuable.
• Study the mark scheme’s method, not just its answer, to learn how to write for the marks.

The examiner reports are especially useful here, they’re feedback from the examiners that a private candidate otherwise lacks.

Papers test, but don’t teach

Past papers reinforce and reveal, but they don’t teach a topic you’ve never met, and they can’t catch the notation and method blind spots you can’t see in your own work. This is the limit of self-study by papers alone: you might repeat an error for months without knowing it’s wrong. So pair papers with:

Simulate the exam, since you have no mocks

A school student sits mocks; a private candidate must create their own. Simulate exam conditions, full time limit, no notes, correct calculator rules, so the real exam isn’t your first experience of the pressure. This is one of the most valuable things a private candidate can do, and one of the easiest to neglect when studying alone.

The single biggest gap in self-study by papers is the blind spot: errors you can’t see because you’re marking your own work with the same misunderstanding.
